Envy

2018 – 2021

The Envy series comprises hand-charred reclaimed wood pieces, recycled sterling silver and emeralds, assembled in compositions that evoke the escalating extent to which nature is transformed by human actions, destabilizing the long-standing balance of our ecosystems.

The result of my meditation on our habit of thinking of our planet as a collection of “things” to use and to own as well as our false impression that we function independently of nature; “Envy” illustrates this illusion of separation from other beings and our environment. But rather than desolation or a sense of loss, I explore the notions of hope, renewal and rebirth that can emerge as a result of catastrophic events observed in nature where entire ecosystems wiped out by forest fires slowly return to life over the months and years.
