2018 – 2021
This series is made up of pieces of hand-charred reclaimed wood, recycled sterling silver and emeralds, put together to create nature-inspired shapes and volumes transformed by human action.
Resulting from my meditation on our habit of thinking of our planet as a set of “things” to be used and possessed as well as our false impression that we function independently of nature; “Envy” illustrates this illusion of separation from other beings and from our environment. But rather than desolation or a sense of loss, I explore the notions of hope, renewal and rebirth that can emerge following catastrophic events seen in nature where entire ecosystems wiped out by wildfires return, slowly coming to life over months and years.
“They discover that in the very darkness of nature a light is hidden, a little spark without which darkness would not be darkness.”
