Collective Exhibition “Jewellery & Music” at Tincal Lab gallery

My creations are currently shown at Tincal Lab gallery as part of the Tincal Lab Challenge 2017 : Jewellery and Music.

For this years challenge, with main objective to show the quality and diversity of contemporary jewellery, Tincal Lab invited 39 jewellery artists from 18 countries to create pieces on the theme of Jewellery and Music.

Works shown

Brooch. On Terry Riley – In C Mali

Necklace. On Arvo Pärt – Fratres

Earrings. On Steve Reich – Music for 18 Musicians

About my process.

Attracted by the translation of music into visual form, Julie researched the correlation between contemporary compositions and the depiction of music outside the realm of traditional music notation.

Concentrating on scores-as-art of Modern Minimalists composers such as Cage, Cardew, Stockhausen and Xenakis, Julie fixed her attention on their compositional techniques, characterised by the repetition of musical phrases, steady pulse, gradual transformation, and non-narrative form.

To explore the effect of this repetitive structure on the listener, she selected specific compositions and looped a single piece of music continuously during the making of each jewellery work to induce a hypnotic state in herself, allowing the music to change her, propel her work elsewhere and ultimately infuse her creations with the essence of the musical pieces.

From an internationally renowned make-up artist to a jeweler, Julie Bégin has a fascinating journey. A native of Montreal  born to Quebec and European parents, she dreamed of becoming a scientist to change the world in her laboratory. After starting college studies in science, she realizes that everyday life lacks a bit of poetry.

Her life takes a new direction when, one summer, she accepts a job as a makeup artist and falls completely in love with the profession. At a very young age, she started a career as a fashion and stage make-up designer which lead her to work and live all over the world, from America to Asia and Europe. Thirty years later, she left New York and returned to Montreal to pursue her new passion: jewellery. Meet the one who allied her passions for arts and science in a unique jewelley line which can now be discovered – in exclusivity in Montreal! – at Rhinoceros by Phi, as well as on her website.
